Kolmanskop, Namibia – Beyond Aukoerebis Expedition

The ghost town of #Kolmanskop is one of those iconic experiences here in #Namibia, so it was always going to be a must-do stop along our Isuzu South Africa #BeyondAukoerebis Expedition. Our stay in #Luderitz was short, but we did make time to explore the gorgeous German architecture and taste some traditional local delicacies, as in #apfelstrudel, ja!

The geographic location of the village itself has a Corsican feel to it, with expansive estuarine bays unfolding amidst rugged and picturesque rock promontories. It is an ocean sport mecca for kite boarders and wind surfers, but unfortunately no swell to mention. This meant the #BeyondAukoerebis Crew was more than happy to spend a few hours exploring Kolmanskuppe, wandering amidst the Gothic, turn-of-the-century buildings of this desolate and forgotten diamond mining town, slowly being consumed by the creeping sands of the Namib-Naukluft Desert ????????????

Today was our first day here on the edge of the #FishRiverCanyon, camping at the gorgeous Gondwana Collection Namibia #CanyonRoadHousePeter Van KetsKaryn Marais and #DieOom are just back from a gorgeous wilderness ride on the Giant Bicycles South Africa #mtb‘s, and we’ll soon head down to the canyon proper to crack a Teubes Wines Karoobossie Sparkling as the sun sets over the craggy Namib landscape

Richtersveld Transfrontier National Park – Aukoerebis Expedition

Part of our #richtersveld mission during the Isuzu South Africa#BeyondAukoerebis Expedition has always been getting every member of our families to experience #adventure, sometimes a touch beyond their comfort zones. The #Tatasberg ascent was a case in point …

What seemed a straightforward #peakbagging mission morphed into a solid few hours on one of the highest peaks in this extreme and decidedly arid environment. A gargantuan boulder field at the foot of the mountain meant the group split early on, with Karyn Marais and Kim van Kets following a rugged gully to the east, while I kept a watchful eye on Robster bounding along a steep line to the east.

Densen Magaisa and Peter Kirk joined up as we approached the false summit, before trekking into a final traverse in search of a line onto the final 20m-plus cliffs. A few edgy scrambles and jumps really tested the boys, and we all got our endorphins properly kick-started en route to the giant summit rock.

We managed to find a slightly easier line down, but the Drip Drop SA sure came in handy. Kim took a tumble on a loose rock and sliced open her calf, and it just goes to show how easily things can go wrong. Fortunately, KVK is a seasoned adventure racer, and handled the painful trek – as well as an emergency cross-border mission and 19 stitches – like the Wonder Woman she is.

Right now, the #BeyondAukoerebis Crew is holed up against a howling gale in quirky-beautiful #LuderitzBay, with German confections and Gothic architecture all round. But the long road to #FishRiverCanyon and the gorgeous Gondwana Collection Namibia Private Mountain Camp is waiting. But first we have a date with the #Kolmanskop Ghost Town at dawn

|Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier National Park – Beyond Aukoerebis Expedition

The Isuzu South Africa #BeyondAukoerebis Expedition just out of that dusty and heavenly space known as the SANParks – |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier National Park … No time for a huge post (and there is just too much to try and capture), but I promise to get to this once we settle in at #LuderitzBay tonight with Peter Van Kets and family. Here are a few images that probably will speak a million words

Treva & Noah reunited – Beyond Aukoerebis Expedition

So much headspace here in the #NoordKaap ????????

Our #BeyondAukoerebis Expedition in the Isuzu South Africa #Xriders have crossed over into one of my absolute favourite provinces in SA. Good news is that #Treva and #Noah have been reunited in #Koiingnaas, and we’ve hooked up with Peter Van Kets and crew. A good #braai and some Namaqua West Coast shiraz from the good folk at Teubes Wines.

But there’s no excuse to skip out on a #dawnie on the reef break next to the #Hondeklip wreck. Glassy, icy, mellow, with just me and Robster on never-ending, peeling sets. Gotta love the Northern Cape ????????????

Now setting in at #Macdougalsbay (for maybe a 2nd surf!) and then on to the wide open #richtersveld skies – kanniewaggie!

Final mad rush before Beyond Aukoerebis Expedition

Final mad rush trying to fit everything into the Isuzu South Africa #Xriders as our Beyond Expeditions #BeyondAukoerebis adventure gets ready to roll out of Cape Town. All I can say is thank erm… heavens for Front Runner South Africa#slimline roof racks, because there is NO WAY we would have fitted all the toys without their superb kit! Shot for all the help so far, Pistol Peter Kirk

Last-minute deliveries from Passion4WholenessDarling Brew and Bean There Coffee Company mean we are sorted for coffee, breakfast and beer … a quick stop in the Namaqua West Coast tomorrow will add a few crates of #rooiwyn just to even out those basic food groups, and then it’s pedal to the metal to meet up with PeterKim, Hannah and that legendary other #OomDudley Bruce Wessels.

Our Dunlop Tyres SA #GrandTrek #at25 tyres are fitted, the SPOT Africa#spotx is loaded to track our route, and it’s lekker to have Tribal Tourist on board helping to spread the word on our #BeyondAukoerebis journey. Keep an eye out to follow this Expedition ‘Driven by #Isuzu‘ ????????

Last shout-out to Ben Olivier and the #SKOI Boys. The Specialkindofidiot team pulled out all the stops to sort us with T-shirts despite #DieOom being a difficult customer. Dankie tjaainas, julle is oraait! And of course Topwraps for the vehicle branding – getting so many compliments

Discovery George Mountain Ultra Trail – Day 1

Mountain Days are always Magic Days, but you can bet your ass they don’t come much better than the annual Discovery George Mountain Ultra Trail. The action kicked into flat-out mode from the 5am start of the 60km, and there’s been no let-up… in fact, there are still a few #trailheroes fighting cramps & #sleepmonsters out there on the final stretch of #GeorgeMUT

Kudos to Zane Schmahl Wikus Van der Walt and the incredible EcoBound Mountain Events crew for pulling off another cracker #trailrun event, hooking Discovery South Africa as a sponsor, and for showing massive year-on-year growth.

#DieOom had one helluva day in those rugged #outeniqua peaks, hoiking the Sony Professional South Africa #sonyalpha kit around for a good 30km (that’s according to my Garmin #Instinct, and we know they never lie)!

The real heroes are the trail runners though – there was some insane descending and gutsy climbing in the shadow of #CradockPeak. And SPOT Africa, always great to know your #SpotAfrica tracker is right there if we ever should need it!

Final tip of the #trailcap to Arbour1 Guesthouse in the heart of #George – great place to stay if you want total tranquility and be close to the trails
