After a night of wild camping in the dramatic Gamchab Canyon near /Ai/Ais Resort, the riders had to saddle up for a quick 13km ride down-river to the river put-in point. This is another one of those amazing days that makes #DesertKnights so unique, with a 4hr paddle in Indian canoes or kayaks towards the De Hoop Camp Site in the Richtersveld National Park.
A few white-water rapids delivered those much anticipated spills and thrills, but this is by no means a ‘rest day’. I saw some seriously tired athletes and much gnashing of teeth as our flotilla navigated the mighty Gariep through the dramatic mountain desert surrounds, with fish eagles and goliath herons patrolling the skies above.
In camp, cold beers and traditional Nama potjies (including a mouth-watering afval potjie – or tripe if you will) awaited the field as they tripped onto the river bank. Drumming, fire-side story-telling, a near full moon rise and the incredible hush of the desert makes this a truly unforgettable #DK Day.
