Some Free State Facts on a cold and drizzly morning in Clarens …

1)   There’s a statue of Jack Daniels aat the Windmill Pub and Grill in Fouriesburg. For reals.

2)   There be mountains here where the Free State nudges up against Lesotho. The climbs will hurt proper on a mountain bike.

3)   The local radio station sounds like when you’re chatting to your brush cut cousins around a camp fire instead of some pre-packaged American booty call.

4)   People will alway greet you on a dirt road, but the greeting becoes exponentially more expansive if you are in a bakkie.

5)   Any craft beer is referred to as “een van daai snaakse biere”, no matter the alcohol percentage.

6)   Cappucino comes in packets in any of the dorps, with Clarens just about the sole exception.

Dankie virrie jol, Vrystaat, julle bly maar net befok. No wonder I have always supported the Cheetahs.
