Endorphins and end-of-days views, literally everywhere you turn your head. And beautiful people, smiling eyes, Creole cuisine and a vibrant island vibe unfolding here on #Rodrigues. It is Day3 for me as part of the #expafrica2019 Road Show, but it feels like I’ve been on the island for at least a week with all the adventures we’ve experienced since banging down on the short local airstrip ????????????
Today saw the Flag Parade through the streets of Port Maruthin – the langurous and laid-back capital of @Ile Rodrigues Tourisme – for the Expedition Africa athletes. The nerves are beginning to show as the enormity of the gruelling 320km course – involving multiple disciplines and at least 72hrs of non-stop racing along this remote and very rugged #mascarene island.
Yesterday was all about getting back into the aqua embrace of the jade Indian Ocean. After the caves, tortoises and abseils of Thursday, it was time to experience @rodriguesisland’s best snorkeling spot. A sneaky swim off a dramatic rocky point gets you to the outer reef, and just off the break, everything goes all aquamarine. This deep-water ocean pool is the Aquarium, and countless fish flash around amidst plate coral outcrops as you fin into their Big Blue world.
Another key outdoor activity is the incredible kiteboarding on offer here. Wind freaks from around the globe pull into Anse Marouk to skim across the waves, and whirl against the clouds. This needs to be added to my #BucketList the next time I visit Rodrigues Island
