The first time I found one of these little critters, I thought I’d picked up a weird tree seed. It was only when it unfurled after five minutes to scuttle off into the leaf matter that I figured – together with #iNaturaluts – that it was a Giant Pill Millipede (Family Sphaerotheriidae), one of the cuter little invertebrates found here in SA’s #GardenRoute forests. They exhibit a kind of #fibonacci pattern when they roll into a protective ball, an ability that has given them the common name of pill- or roly-poly bugs.
