Just to the north of ‘Die Baai’ – as most locals refer to #HondeklipBay – you will find a hide-away dorpie by the name of #Koingnaas. This tiny mining settlement packs a superb #tourism punch, with an astounding range of outdoor adventures, not to mention a rich history, incredible prehistoric fossils and a seriously fascinating semi-desert ecosystem.
The word ‘Koingnaas’ comes from the #Koekoe people, and means ‘sweet water’. And the reason for the name is that one of the biggest fresh-water aquifers in the southern hemisphere is found here. Yesterday, we had the privilege of visiting the transcendental dune fields situated atop the aquifer with local guide, Dudley Bruce Wessels, for what surely rates as one of the best #4×4 day outings in all of SA. This proved a superb test for the Isuzu South Africa vehicles and our Dunlop Tyres SA #GrandTrek wheels (not to mention the drivers).
We also fitted in another #surf after #camping wild #Noup and immersed ourselves in what must be one of the top #travel regions in South Africa to #PlayLocal and #StayLocal. This is exactly what our Beyond Expeditions #beyondlockdown2 journey is all about: supporting local tourism, so get out there and see why millions of people from around the planet visit #ZA for their outdoor, nature and culture fix!
