Crusader Safaris

Klei-lat Wars. Farm Dam Dips. Thunder Storm Trail Runs. And even Flash floods… They may all be on the cards, even if you’re in the middle of the dry-as-dust #BaviaansRiver Conservancy in the Eastern Cape‘s Frontier Country. This is where I grew up, and it is always an incredible treat to return to your old stomping grounds.

Gravel road bike rides with Karyn Marais, Hilana Maraisand Zane Schmahl – often watched by herds of free-ranging lechwe and kudu – and clifftop hikes kept us in the zone as we created content for Core Merino  on our first project for #2021, but one moment really stood out: a late afternoon #FlashFlood! Robs has been dying to experience one of these, and when Mother Nature obliged with a cloud burst, he went utterly feral. The Baviaans Rivier delivered a 2m roiling wall of water, which thundered down the valley like a runaway train.

The power is impossible to explain and neither is the joy of a boy in utter awe of this immense display of natural force. Huge thanks to Andrew Pringle and family for sharing their wilderness space with us; this stunning part of our country is the perfect place in which to reconnect with nature, recharge your soul and ground your inner spiri.
