Travel to me always comes with a Jekyll & Hyde component. In order to chase your adventure, you often have to leave those you love the most behind. You swap that warm cocoon of family – and familiarity – to do a deep-dive in search of the weird and strange. In the process, you have to shed your skin, sharpen your blade, embrace the unpredictable … It usually takes me a day or two to slot into that ‘Game On’ persona.
But it is all good: Amsterdam, Reykjavik and Ittoqortoormiit await, and then we sail the Arctic fjords aboard the Oceanwide Expeditions ‘Rembrandt van Rijn’, a tiny wooden schooner dating back to 1949. Ironic then that I leave on the day when my new ISUZU South Africa #Xrider – resplendent with an Alu-Cab: Ultimate Overland Products canopy – arrives, right? No matter, I’m looking forward to some solid #offroad adventures in this amazing vehicle when I swap that faraway sub-zero landscape for the warmth that comes with exploring South Africa. And it’s going to be way more exciting than just a trip to the airport, that’s for sure!
