After the amazing build-up and intensive hype surrounding the testing Prologue at the inauguaral Molweni Trail Run, presented by Salomon SA, it was a nervous bunch of athletes who lined up for the start at the Forest Hills Sports Club just after dawn yesterday morning.
One thing is for sure; they had ample reason to be nervous, as ahead of them waited 32km of trail, littered with a range of natural obstacles ranging from treacherous sink holes, vertiginous cliffs and (quite possibly) mega-sized mambas.
Fortunately, none of the above potential dangers kicked in, and the race unfolded as a well-organised adventure run of note. Graham Daniel and his 369 COMMUNICATIONS crew saw to it that athletes were well-briefed, with the result that this will be an event runners will certainly queue up to enter every year.
Out on the gruelling route itself, Thabang Elias Madiba and Lucky Miya threw down the gauntlet pretty early on in the day, but strong challenges from both Jock Green and Matt Kretzmann kept them in contention as the race went to the wire.
The women’s race belonged to the Queen of KZN Trail Susan Erskine Don-Wauchope, who was followed home by Takalani Nthulane Ndandani and Daneil Feldmann. Full results and more information on this amazing race are available on the Molweni Trail Run Facebook Page
